BOYS IN THE FRONT SEAT

"Unraveling the complexities of Black male relationships, 'Boys in the Front Seat' (2017) is a thought-provoking photography and documentary series that examines the intricate dynamic between romance and emotion.

Through intimate portraits and personal stories, twenty men share their innermost thoughts and feelings about their relationships with Black women, exposing the constraints of patriarchal gender roles and hyper-masculine expectations.

In the documentary, I pose six poignant questions:

1. How do you feel about being in the front seat of a woman’s car?
2. Do you feel like you or men hold the majority of the power or decision-making in relationships with women?
3. Do you feel like you hold majority of the power in [your] relationships?
4. Do you feel like you or men have to obtain a certain persona in a relationship with a woman?
5. Do you feel like you have trouble expressing your emotions?
6. Why do you feel like you have trouble expressing your emotions?

Revealing the power struggles and emotional tensions that exist in their relationships. As Walters reflects on her own biases and expectations, the series becomes a personal exploration of growth and self-awareness.

Through this powerful and introspective work, Walters sheds light on the ways in which women take control of their lives and the roles men play in shaping their experiences.
