TEMPORARY SCULPTURES

The first iteration of Temporary Sculptures took place in my studio in Los Angeles. After a month of wrapping my body with wire, I was ready to document the performance. Around this time I was studying the work of Eva Hesse and was fascinated by her use of materials that weren't made to last through time. It was her work that began me fascination with temporality.

Thinking about temporality and my obsession with sculptures (performing with them and studying them), I discovered Eleanor Antin's picture series, "Carving: A Traditional Sculpture," where she documents losing 10 pounds in 37 days. She was thinking about her body as a sculpture and using it as one. Between Hesse and Antin, my thoughts on the temporary and sculpture clicked: I would turn myself into a sculpture.

As I watched time through my mother's body I saw the time in mine.

With every passing moment, my body was changing, sculpting itself with and without my help. This series is my exploration of the temporary in both time and the body. It is about the confinement I put on myself versus the confinement I feel is put on me by others.
