UNDERMASS
A PERFORMANCE WITH MICHAEL HEIZER'S LEVITATED MASS

Michael Heizer's Levitated Mass sits on the lawn of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). I had seen it many times, but it never really caught my attention. That was until I saw Levitated Mass: The Story of Michael Heizer's Monolithic Sculpture, a documentary that takes you on the journey of one man's dream of the perfect boulder, and how it brought together a city and its surrounding counties. It was life-changing to see the process of this piece when I always thought it was simply just a rock.
Like the artists Jeanne-Claude and Christo, Heizer has shown me why you have to believe in your work even if it takes several decades before it comes to life.
As soon as I returned to LA, I returned to this boulder I had ignored for years. Like my other movement pieces, I was curious about what performance and photographs would come about when my energy united with this ancient 340-ton rock-turned sculpture.
This performance took place in February of 2021.
